What to expect during electrical inspections
Electrical safety experts keep on advocating about annual electrical safety inspections, and indeed it is important to keep everything safe. But what can households expect from an annual electrical maintenance inspection?
The San Diego Electrical Professionals Society (SDEPS) says it is important that every homeowner is aware of what to expect during routine maintenance inspections so that they can at least communicate clearly with their electrician contractor. This way, the SDEPS says they will also not fall victim of electrician scams on supposed maintenance checks. Electrical Safety First says a periodic inspection will reveal issues on wiring, load, possible need for repairs and servicing.
“Reveal if any of your electrical circuits or equipment are overloaded. Find any potential electric shock risks and fire hazards. Identify any defective electrical work. Highlight any lack of earthing or bonding. Tests are also carried out on wiring and fixed electrical equipment to check that they are safe. A schedule of circuits is also provided, which is invaluable for a property.”

The Electrical Safety Foundation International says a thorough over-all inspection is in order when: “(1) Your home is 40 years old or older; (2) You purchase a previously-owned home; (3) Your home has undergone a major renovation; (4) You have added major new appliances in the last 10 years.”

The SDEPS likewise reminds homeowners that it will be best to do the annual inspection the same time each year so that they will be better reminded on when to have it done.
Having a good working relationship with an electrician contractor will also make this annual task easier to do, as you no longer need to hire a new one each time. Chances are as well that your electrician will be the one to remind you about the maintenance check.
